(G3,G4) Learning How to Draw a Swan

We learned how to draw a swan by using the graceful curves of number two.

Pencil studies of turning the number two into a swan.

Based on our drawings we created a template of a swan.

We used our swan templates to create a composition.

We used black sharpies to create the design.

No interest in painting the swans.

Student comment:  "The sun is setting in my picture."

Student comment:  "The swan is looking at the reflection of the sun."

(G4) Sculptural experiments

For the last two weeks some of the students have been working with clay.
Since we did not have a kiln we had some unfortunate accidents.
The students learned that, while in the process of creating art, little accidents can often turn into great successes.

Student comment: "I made a person".

Student comment: "This mannequin is happy".

Student comment: "I made a tall cactus".
The cactus part was originally a second pinch pot that broke.

Student comment: " We will never know if he likes orange and red".

Student comment: "The big rock is resting after a thunderstorm".

Student comment:  "My mannequin is dancing".

The balancing act.

Student comment: " I glued the pieces and made a dinosaur".
Another happy accident.

(G,3) Compositions in chalk and oil pastels.

Using our fingers to blend the colors.
We used different tools to add texture to our compositions.

No brushes for this compositions.

Creating lines and patterns with different tools.

In creating interesting designs, sky was the limit.

The final product.

  The effect of soft pastels.
Observing the difference in using oil and chalk pastels.

Our fingers are often the best tools.

Observing the difference in using markers and chalk pastels.

This student was a little timid in the beginning using her fingers.
The fear is gone!

Trying to create a point of interest.

Student comment:  "My yellow flower protects the hearts".

Working slowly to complete our design.

Working with both hands.

Creating textures.
A balanced composition.

Student comment: "The red flower is the point of interest; but I like my clouds too".
